New Year Reflection: Being Present with Future Goals
Happy 2022, my beautiful friends! I hope you all had a lovely holiday season, regardless of however you do (or don’t) celebrate.
Now that I’m done with holiday gift-guides, I’m back to my newsletter! I’m happy to be back — as much as I love to share pretty things, I also love to share little love notes with my readers. My following may be small, but it is bold and mighty. Truly, I am always blown away by the amount of engagement and love I receive from this community — I feel boundlessly fortunate and grateful for you.
On that note, one of my intentions heading into 2022 is this: to appreciate what I already have, rather than focus on what I don’t have. To me, one great tragedy in life is when a person has all they could ever want, yet still feels unfulfilled. Really, there is very little we actually need — we can find contentment in this moment if we choose to be grateful for what is here and now.
If I’m being honest, I think that’s one hangup I have with New Years resolutions. It is beautiful to have aim and ambition, but to me, the most important practice (and the one that’s often overlooked) is being present and appreciative within the process of meeting goals. We sometimes assume that we will be happier when we meet our goals — but if we fool ourselves into thinking happiness exists in a future time or place, we will never appreciate what is in front of us now. Often, too, we end up achieving that magical goal and we ask ourselves: okay, what next?
Of course, I do have intentions and plans for the year ahead — our trips, hobbies and practices, and most of all, our baby girl — but within my planning, I want to remain as present and appreciative as possible. I want to know my destination on the map, but also enjoy the views along the way.
Wishing you a year full of beauty, growth, and gratitude for the present moment (because before you know it, 2022 will turn into 2023).
All the love — Megan
