What Our Mothers Taught Us

My mother and me.

Yesterday, I received a message from a follower/ friend after I posted my newest designer handbag. She said, “your daughter is going to be the luckiest, inheriting all the lovely pieces you have curated.”

I joked with her and said, “I wish I inherited bags from my mom, but she gave me an appreciation for nature, which is more meaningful to me.”

We began talking about the gifts we inherited from our mothers—the ones that aren’t material, but more so, practical or sentimental.

It inspired me to ask my following on Instagram:
What is one positive thing your mother showed/taught/instilled in you?

Here are the answers I received:

  1. Never be afraid of rain.

  2. Do what is right, even when it isn’t easy. Have a strong moral compass.

  3. My mother never spoke negatively about herself or her body—I realize the impact this had on me as an adult.

  4. To value the ability to walk (and any working body part in general).

  5. “No” is a full sentence.

  6. Never confuse kindness for weakness, and a little blush goes a long way.

  7. Family comes before all else.

  8. Wake up early.

  9. Independence and the value of knowledge.

  10. To always find positivity in every situation.

  11. A clear house is a clear mind.

  12. To have a grateful heart… and that a good, white button up is always appropriate.

  13. Love for art, and to always be kind.

  14. Lead by example, always use your manners, and love unconditionally.

  15. Waste not, want not.

  16. How to thrift. We would go to yard sales at 7am every Saturday morning.

  17. How to grow a garden from seeds.

  18. Whatever bump we experience in life is just a learning opportunity.

  19. Always be kind. To everyone. If I do nothing else in the life, that is the most important.

  20. My mother never speaks negatively about anyone. Ever. It’s amazing.

  21. I remember when I was 4, maybe 5, she looked at me snd told me we would be friends forever.

  22. Our life is a reflection of a growing baby. We need to crawl for us to learn how to walk.

  23. A strong work ethic.

  24. That money doesn’t buy happiness; it comes from within.

  25. Never give up on what you believe is right.

  26. Knowing everyone and being everyone’s friend is a not a necessity in life.

  27. Simple style is often the best—makeup and clothes are not the most important thing about me.

  28. Wind in the trees.

  29. A love for animals.

  30. Get space when I need it. She’d often go for drives or take time in her room.

  31. To be confident.

  32. Stand your ground and share your opinion because you matter.

  33. How to be loving through tough times.

  34. The love and appreciation of music (all different genres).

  35. How to cook, garden, clean, be positive, and non-judgmental. She is amazing.

  36. Laugh every day, and tell your children how much you love them.
