My Interview with Sistain

Recently, I was interviewed by Jaclyn Tracy of Sistain. Here is the original article —thought I would share on my page to further imbed both my ethos, but also, spread the love of Sistain!

Tastemaker Megan Karp on Living Simply, Healthy, Beautifully

Stories & Interviews

Interviewed by Jaclyn Tracy of Sistain

Megan Karp on living simply, healthy, beautifully.

Who are you?

I’m a spirit in a human body — living in this world with various titles: a writer, a health coach, a tastemaker, and my favorites, wife and mother.

What motivates you?

As cliche as it sounds, feeling my best motivates me. I feel my best when I have inner peace, so really, my actions are motivated by my intention to find more peace — it’s that simple. Whether it’s connecting to myself through movement, enjoying the earth’s nourishment, or creating a beautiful, calm environment in my home — it’s all with the intention to find greater peace within myself.

I believe all material things carry energy, and so I try to engage with material things in a way that help guide me towards a harmonious state.

What inspires you or where do you draw inspiration from from a home design perspective?

Although I find beauty in many different design styles, I’m most drawn towards those that are calming (I’m a Cancer horoscope, which means a calm home is *very* important to me). This means neutral pallets, reduced clutter, natural materials, warm textures, lived-in vintage heirlooms. I want my home to feel clean and simple (hence the neutrals and minimalist elements) but also full of life (hence the lived-in heirlooms and natural materials).

I gain inspiration from all over the place — I love vintage retailers like Chairsh, 1stDibs, and Galerie Provenance. I also grab inspo from different designers — Jenni Kayne for her serene aesthetic, Athena Calderone for her to artistic design, Amber Interiors for her earthy grounded atmospheres.

“My actions are motivated by my intention to find more peace — it’s that simple. Whether it’s connecting to myself through movement, enjoying the earth’s nourishment, or creating a beautiful, calm environment in my home — it’s all with the intention to find greater peace within myself.

OUR PHILOSOPHY AT SISTAIN IS
TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF, TAKE CARE OF THE PLANET

How do you take care of yourself?

I make small daily promises and keep them: to connect to myself through movement, nourishment, and mindfulness (and ideally, some solitude).

My movement, nourishment, and mindfulness practices look a little every day (because my needs are ever-changing). Most mornings, I love an intermittent fast followed by a juice or smoothie — but others, I need a heavier breakfast shortly after waking. Some days, I need a sprinted run, and others, a walk or hot yoga class. Some days, a five minute meditation in the bath, and others, an hour journal session.

While my days are never the same, I consistently find ways to connect to myself through wellness practices that feel right for that day.

Favorite sustainable brands?

SISTAIN, of course (duh)! I’ve also loved RMS Beauty for years — been a big advocate since it’s early days. More recently, I’ve been into Cymbiotika for vitamins and supplements, St. Roche for feminine silhouettes, and Koala Eco for cleaning products.

Anything you want to share about sustainability and parenting OR sustainability and nutrition?

My philosophy is “keep it simple” with literally everything. Own fewer, quality things — whether it’s the food in your refrigerator, the cosmetics in your cabinet, or the pieces in your closet and home. I also believe in getting rid of things regularly, and being less attached to our possessions. This may sound like a contradiction, coming from someone who promotes products for brands, but there is space for having fun with beautiful products and living an intentional, meaningful lifestyle.

What is your favorite go-to smoothie recipe?

My Coconut Berry smoothie is my breakfast most days — I have particularly loved Cymbiotika’s plant protein lately. I always top with Dang unsweetened coconut chips and a dollop of Philosopher Food’s sprouted almond butter.

I love to pour into a pretty glass and use my glass straws from SISTAIN — makes it more than just nourishment, but also, enhances the experience. (I also ADORE my mug from SISTAIN for hot beverages!)
